An interesting discovery awaits lovers of healthy food in Austria. Vegan meat substitutes have been around for a long time. You can’t surprise anyone with soy cutlets on supermarket shelves. After that, this year, in March, the Viennese company Revo Foods is going to produce vegan salmon on a 3D printer.

Vegan seafood with a mission

There are almost no fish of plant origin on the market, says the company owner Robin Sims. “We intend to offer an alternative to overfishing and industrial aquaculture”, says Robin.

According to the entrepreneur, a special 3D printer making for these purposes. Only natural and healthy ingredients are used in the production of vegan salmon. There are eleven of them in total. It including algae extracts from Holland, vegetable oils from Austria, and legume proteins from the Netherlands.

Revo Foods said that they are very proud of the fantastic nutritional content that is high in omega-3 and protein. This plant-based salmon contains absolutely no heavy metals, microplastics, antibiotics, or any other waste materials found in industrial aquaculture salmon.

In conclusion, the company considers the advantages of its products to be obvious since and, most importantly, it does not contain antibiotics and other health harmful substances. The trial batch was convincing in a perfectly good taste of vegan salmon. Salmon production from the printer is scheduling to begin in late summer.

A Polish manufacturer, Omni3D started in 2013 by producing cheap open-source FDM printers. Three years later, the company released the first professional 3D printer, which remains a key model in the manufacturer’s catalog – Factory 2.0.

Currently, the manufacturer is developing cooperation with industrial and scientific and educational centers, and accordingly, a professional line of 3D printers is developing. In early 2020, an amateur-grade model appeared with the Omni3D logo: Omni200.

The Omni200 3D printer can be classified in the high end of the hobbyist segment. The functionality of the device is typical for devices of this class.

The main feature of the Polish model is the presence of an all-metal body and an aluminum extruder. A closed case means that the object during the printing process is protected from sudden changes in ambient temperature, drafts, for example, and the likelihood of the appearance of defects associated with them – delamination, peeling of the model from the platform – is minimal.

In addition, a closed chamber provides a higher level of security compared to an open one. Therefore, the Omni200 can be considered as a 3D printer for a school or other educational institution.

Another quality feature is the presence of a flexible magnetic substrate. The use of a flexible backing means that the printed article is easy to remove from the cooking chamber and peel off from the backing.

The capabilities of the Omni200 3D printer are typical of the basic segment. The maximum temperature of the extruder is 260ºC and the working table is 100ºC. The dimensions of the working chamber are 200x200x200 mm. With a minimum print layer thickness of 50 microns, the accuracy will be sufficient for most projects.

Contents of delivery

The Omni200 is a factory-assembled device. It can be plugged in and used out of the box. Since all components are installed initially, only the flexible backing, instructions, and warranty card are included with the printer.

Preparation for work

Getting the Omni200 up and running is the same as setting up any desktop indoor 3D printer. There is a filament compartment on the printer under the cover. The operator installs the spool and feeds the filament through the Teflon tube into the extruder. Files are downloaded to the printer from the SD card.

Software

The manufacturer recommends using the Simplify 3D slicer with its printers. This program is designed for both experienced and novice users. The Simplify 3D interface is quite simple. An important advantage for some users will be compatibility not only with Windows but also with Linux and MacOS.

Expendable materials

The Omni200 is designed for use with common filaments with a melting point of 250 ºC or less. Plastic materials with different physical and chemical characteristics are available to the user:

FLEX;

PLA;

ABS;

Nylon.

Examples of using

One of the most common uses for FDM printers of this level is to create bright merchandise and original gifts.

Omni3D used a 3D printer to print a souvenir heart for Valentine’s Day.

The printer is also used to create tutorials, autotuning parts, and other products.

Pros and cons of the Omni200

Pros:

All-metal printing chamber;

Aluminum extruder;

Reputable manufacturer.

Cons:

Does not work with refractory plastics (from 260°C).

The Polish Omni200 printer, amateur in functionality, but quite professional in the quality of workmanship and printing, can be considered as a device for educational institutions, as well as for the manufacture of small parts of prototypes and homemade devices, or as a trial purchase to get acquainted with the quality of the brand’s products.

The device is made reliably, provides a predictably excellent work result, but the device does not stand out against the background of numerous competitors. The machine is equipped with one extruder and a standard size print chamber. The market’s typical maximum extruder temperature of 260ºC is sufficient for many educational, promotional, and DIY projects.

The Danish startup Particle3D has developed a technology for printing porous bone prostheses from calcium orthophosphate and is ready to start testing it on humans in the near future.

This was reported by the publication “Popular Mechanics”.

Yes, this technology allows not only to create individual prostheses for each patient but also to restore living skeletal tissue in a few years.

Created implants quickly begin to be replaced by cells of the body and after a while turn into real bones. Scientists conducted tests on pigs and mice, which showed that eight weeks after surgery, blood vessels germinate in the prosthesis.

The first tests of similar technology, which were conducted on humans in the United States, suggest that the complete replacement of the prosthesis by body cells occurs in less than a year.

However, such prostheses have a disadvantage – their lower strength compared to real bones. That is until the full recovery of the limb can not be applied.

To create such a prosthesis, it is necessary to scan the damaged area, download the data to the computer-aided design system, make adjustments to the resulting model, and send for printing.

The use of such prostheses involves only one operation to install them. In addition, the printed design can make the necessary medication, which will be released within a few months after implant placement.

American architectural studio Hannah, in collaboration with students at Cornell University, created a small eco-home in upstate New York using 3D concrete printing.

Also in the design used substandard ash wood. The design, called Ashen Cabin, demonstrates the potential for using both types of materials to produce environmentally sustainable facilities.

An environmentally-friendly project demonstrates how substandard wood, in this case, infected with ash emerald gold beetles, can be used in combination with 3D printing to build a suburban home.

A small house stands on a printed concrete base consisting of truncated pyramids. Concrete is also present in other constructions, including in the high pipe of the steamer, in the base for the sunbed bench and on the floor of the hut. The rest of the exterior is lined with individually shaped wood panels, and the dwelling also has windows framed by plywood.

Typically, infected ash trees are left to decompose or burn, resulting in carbon dioxide emissions. Using a robotic arm equipped with a saw, the project developers were able to create a wooden cladding of irregular shape and, thus, find a use for wood, which otherwise would simply disappear.

There is no electricity or water in the house, there is only a small concrete washbasin and concrete bench, as well as a retractable plywood structure that can be used as a bed at night.

British biotechnology company FabRx Ltd. announced the specialized pharmaceutical 3D printer M3DIMAKER, designed with the expectation of 3D-printing the pills.

Founded by scientists at University College London, FabRx has been researching various 3D printing methods for personalized drug delivery vehicles over the past six years. Additive pill manufacturing may seem like a weird idea, but it does have a whole bunch of potential benefits.

The most obvious is the possibility of an individual dosage. You can print pills of any size without having to break the standard pills into halves or quarters. However, the same can be done with ordinary capsules, but, in this case, the human factor cannot be ruled out since this is done manually. Much more interesting is the ability to adjust digestibility. For example, a pill can be made instant for those cases where fast-acting drugs are needed, for example, to combat epilepsy. In other cases, prolonged dosing or even delivery of the drug to a specific section of the digestive tract may be preferable.

Since 2014, the FabRx team has been working on various methods for 3D printing of pills and experimenting not only with basic materials, but also with pill forms: in one of the early series of experiments, scientists evaluated the dissolution rate of cylindrical, spherical, cubic, and even pyramidal pills. It would be at least impractical to produce complex forms using traditional methods, that is, pressing or extrusion followed by cutting, and even individually. Hence the idea of 3D printing pills of an adjustable shape and with an adjustable composition.

Although the company conducted many experiments using stereolithography and selective laser sintering technologies, the choice of technology for a specialized additive system of its design fell on the layering of a polymer rod. Of course, safe, biocompatible polymers, such as water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol, are used as the base material. The drug can be mixed directly into the raw materials during the manufacture of the filament, or you can use the second feeding system – a screw mechanism built into the same head and the feeding powder. Accordingly, you can adjust the content of the drug at all stages of printing, combine different drugs, and at the same time grow tablets of any size and the most ingenious forms.

Regarding productivity, the developers claim that 3D printing of an individual four-week supply of twenty-eight pills takes about eight minutes. The equipment allegedly has already passed successful tests in hospitals, pharmacies, and research institutions, and now it is ready to enter the commercial market.

MaskiD face masks will be part of a package already consisting of the Neutrogena Skin 360 app and the Skin Scanner appliance that went on sale last year. A small hinged gadget, which plays the role of a kind of microscope, allows iPhone 6 and later smartphones to shoot the face in high resolution, and the application helps to select the necessary preparations for the care of individual skin areas. To make the process even more convenient, the company’s specialists decided to resort to 3D printing of individual masks, modeled according to data from the same mounted scanner.

Hydrogel masks will be selectively soaked with various cosmetics in six zones responsible for the forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks, chin and nasolabial folds: hyaluronic acid to retain moisture, vitamin B3 to improve microcirculation, girlish chamomile extract as an anti-inflammatory agent, glucosamine-stabilized for exfoliation and anti-wrinkle, vitamin C for skin lightening. 3D-printed cosmetic masks will be available in the third quarter of this year, although during the pilot program will be available only to US residents.

Today, 3D printing is a dynamic field with great potential.

3D technologies that will change humanity According to the analysis carried out, this area is only at the beginning of its development; therefore, in the near future, AF technologies will be able to more significantly influence the development of the construction business, redistributing spheres of influence and income. Thanks to existing facilities created with the help of 3D printer technology, one can already see today what is in store for us in the near future.

Villa in Beijing, created by Huashang Tengda. The area of the object is 400 square meters, while it was built in just 45 days. Using a huge 3Dprinter with a manipulator, the company’s specialists built a villa whose wall thickness is 2.5 cm. This building is able to withstand even an 8-magnitude earthquake. In addition to the rectangular box, the object also had rounded turrets. It is worth noting that a 3D printer significantly reduced financial, time and human resources, because, using conventional technology, it would take more than 3 months to build such a villa.

Mini-buildings in Barcelona, created by the Institute of Architecture of Catalonia. These objects have an interesting, unique architectural form. When printing them, experts used several small 3D printers, which created high-rise buildings. The construction process was very interesting: one 3D printer built the foundation for the next one, increasing the number of floors of the building to the required height. Such devices are easy to move from place to place, and their cost is low. A distinctive feature of this technology is the possibility of round-the-clock work without interruptions.

Buildings from the ground in Barcelona, created by the Institute of Architecture of Catalonia. 3D printing technology used for the construction of these objects, allowed the construction of the usual soil. Experts, using ordinary soil and a few additional components, created a natural material with tensile properties 3 times more than that of clay. It is this discovery will reduce the cost of housing, significantly changing the construction business in the world. Even poor countries can afford to provide housing for all those in need.

Unique architectural forms in Amsterdam, built by the Dutch architect Yanjap Rheissenars. This original structure was created by one large 3D printer with a 6-meter manipulator. This technology for creating buildings has opened up for the world the opportunity to create objects “without a beginning and an end” that you would not otherwise build.
Autonomous mobile homes in Oak Ridge, USA, invented by the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill architecture bureau. This mobile home is an original building with a length of 12 meters, a width of 3.7 meters. The design is uniquely equipped with solar panels that are capable of delivering the collected energy and providing it with a house, and even an electric car designed for a mobile home. Thanks to such housing, people will be able to explore new places on Earth.
Temporary housing in 30 minutes, France, developed by the University of Nantes. The use of 3D technology for the construction of temporary shelters, will allow to solve the global problem of accommodating refugees, after hostilities, cataclysms, natural disasters. Such houses are built very quickly, they have rather simple forms, they are not durable, but they fulfill their main function – to save people from cold, precipitation, and sun. Print temporary housing from polyurethane compounds high-speed printer with a manipulator. This technology will be on the replacement of the usual and inefficient tent campsites.

3D carbon dioxide printing, Los Angeles, invented by CO2NCRETE. Thanks to the unique developments of this company, it became possible to convert carbon dioxide, which is emitted into the air by industrial companies, into a durable building material, similar in properties to concrete. This method has not yet been patented, it is being carefully studied, but with a successful outcome it will improve the ecological condition of our planet and reduce the use of earth resources.

3D printing of bridges in Amsterdam, developed by MX3D. This rather complex engineering task was successfully accomplished by two 3D printers, the appearance of which was similar to automotive robot welders that moved in six different directions. The bridge is still under construction, but most importantly, at the moment it meets all the standards. Completion is scheduled for 2107 year.

Brick-conditioner, Oakland, USA, an invention of the company Emerging Object. These bricks, printed using 3D print, have a built-in cooling system and function by absorbing water with its gradual evaporation. Building a house with at least one wall of such bricks will allow natural air conditioning at no additional cost.

Plastic houses in Chicago, created by the architecture studio WATG. It was the construction of houses made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic that became an excellent alternative to basic or classical building materials. Such buildings are printed on a 3D printer not entirely, but with separate sheet panels, which are already in place combined into one design.

This means that scientists in this field of science are still looking for ways to print 3D tissue that can be used as a fully functional biological material, suitable for implantation.

Researchers from the New Castle University, trying to broaden the boundaries of 3D printing, managed to print the 3D cornea of the human eye. The method developed by them allows the creation of functional tissues, which – as they admit themselves – in the near future can be used as tissue for transplants.

The prospect of creating organs and cellular structures “on demand” brings many potential benefits – now, for people with corneal defect, where the only right solution is a transplant (it is estimated that there are around 5 million in the world), an awfully troublesome problem is to wait . The cornea can be taken from a recently deceased person who has not suffered from any of the diseases that might imply shortening the viability of the tissue.

Recognizing these problems, a team of scientists took up the 3D bioprint of the eye part. The cornea was created from a specially developed biotouch, which consists of collagen, i.e. connective tissue protein and alginate – the substances provide the expected elasticity of the tissue. The mass was also enriched with the patient’s stem cells – early in vitro studies showed that human cells showed high survival.

As the head of the research team admits, they developed a biotube that provides cells with the right environment for growth – the material is stiff enough to maintain its shape, yet soft enough to be extruded and create the desired shape. He also adds that creating the optimal consistency of the gel is crucial – research teams from around the world are trying to achieve the perfect consistency of the biotouch, while maintaining the highest survival rate of the cells.

The 3D bioprint process was carried out using a bioplotter. The bioink was applied in the form of concentric vertebrae until a full-sized cornea of the human eye was obtained – all in less than 10 minutes! Due to the small thickness (0.5-0.6 mm on average) and the lack of vascularization, scientists did not have to struggle with the problem of building a complicated network of blood vessels.

Now a number of tests are waiting for the biodegradable 3D lenses, however, members of the research team believe that the possibility of additive production of these tissues, taking into account the anatomy of the eye of a particular patient, may turn out to be the technology of the future.

Villa in Beijing, created by Hushang Tengda.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the latest fashion for the use of 3D printers in the production process was also taken under the microscope.

The topic of waste segregation, saving materials and reducing the presence of harmful rubbish in the environment is constantly on the candlestick. Social awareness in this area is growing, because if not ourselves, then who is to care for the world in which we live? As far as we know that ecological solutions can be used in the case of classic printing, how does it look with 3D printing?

One of the positive aspects is the possibility of using recycled cartridges in 3D printers. They are of course much less durable and lower in quality, but waste treatment is an important part of caring for ecology. Unfortunately, solutions based on recycling are unlikely to be accepted in professional production processes, as materials originating from waste processing are characterized by drastically reduced mechanical properties – they are simply more fragile.

In the production itself, two main methods are distinguished: one is a cavity and one a waste less one. The first one concerns mainly elements manufactured using traditional methods of metal materials (titanium, aluminum, gold, silver, etc.). The machining is then very complicated, and after it is finished, there are many debris that can hardly be used again. The second method is used for production based on plastics – it is an injection method, consisting of filling the matrix with a liquid material, which solidifies inside, actually not producing any waste, if not counting the matrix itself (it should be replaced from time to time).

In 3D printers, the SLS method is used, which uses a high-power laser whose radius is sintered with small particles, both plastics, as well as metal and ceramics. As a result, waste remaining after the “pattern” can still be used for subsequent projects. The 3D printers using this solution allow to significantly reduce the amount of waste generated during production, it is not surprising that the largest companies in the world, to mention even Apple, Dell and General Electrics, reflecting on the introduction of 3D printers as a permanent element of the production process.

Another aspect of the ecological use of 3D printers is the hypothetical limitation of transport. If we could get a situation where the 3D printer would become as popular as ordinary printing devices, instead of buying, for example, toys and waiting for their delivery, we could buy toy plans and print them ourselves. And although the argument itself is quite logical, the world is still far away from this state of affairs.

3D printing, although more environmentally-friendly than traditional methods of producing objects, is unlikely to have a significant impact on blog ecology. First of all, it is still an experimental method that does not allow for creating more complicated elements that are important during production. The glory is the famous self-replicating 3D printers, because they would not be able to print important, miniature elements of themselves. There is no reason to count on producers switching to 3D printers, because it would be too big a loss for the industry supplying production materials, and large corporations will certainly not allow it.
